🥣 Vorbereitung – Vor dem Einsatz im Unterricht
- Technical Preparation (20 minutes)
- Create a Google account if you do not already have one.
- Access NotebookLM at notebooklm.google.com and log in with your Google account.
- If it is your first time using the tool, test it by clicking “Create new notebook” and uploading a sample document to explore the Studio and Chat features.
- Click “Create new notebook” and drop your selected file(s) into the upload area. You can include several documents; NotebookLM will work across all of them.
- In the Studio section on the right, click the “Audio Overview” button. NotebookLM will generate a podcast-style conversation about the content. Download the audio file once generated.
- In the Chat function, generate a vocabulary list using the prompt: “Create a vocabulary list of 8-12 essential words with simple definitions and example sentences suitable for [A2/B1/B2] language learners.”
- Pedagogical Preparation (10 minutes)
- Select a text (textbook passage, newspaper article, government document, etc.) that matches students’ proficiency level or is slightly above it. Ideal length: 2-10 pages for a 10-20-minute podcast.
- Review the AI-generated vocabulary list and adjust if needed before sharing with learners.
🔥 Umsetzung (Im Unterricht / Synchron )
- (10 min) Vocabulary introduction: Present the AI-generated vocabulary list to the class. Ask students to give examples of how they could use each word in a sentence. Clarify any confusion before listening.
- (15 min) Guided listening: Play the podcast to the class using a shared speaker or individual earphones. Ask students to note any unfamiliar words as they listen. Pause and replay sections if necessary. After listening, invite questions about any words or phrases heard.
- (15 min) Comprehension exercise: Use NotebookLM’s Studio section to generate a quiz, or use the Chat function with the prompt: “Create 10 listening comprehension questions about this text – 5 main idea questions and 5 detail questions.” Distribute the questions to students and allow time to answer individually or in pairs. Review answers together as a class.
🧂 Differenzierung & Inklusion
- For Deaf or Hard of Hearing students: Provide a full transcript of the podcast (generated from NotebookLM’s Chat function: “Provide a full transcript of the key content in this source”).
- For ADHD or attention difficulties: Break the podcast into 5-minute maximum listening segments. Set a clear task between each segment. Include movement breaks between segments.
- For lower language levels: Pre-teach more vocabulary before listening. Use a shorter or simpler source text. Provide sentence starters for comprehension questions.
- For higher language levels: Encourage learners to critically evaluate the AI-generated podcast for accuracy and completeness, and identify anything it missed or oversimplified.

⚠️ Ethik, Datenschutz & Schutzmaßnahmen
- Student data privacy: Never upload documents containing student names, addresses, contact information, individual student work with identifying details, assessment results, medical or special needs documentation, immigration status, or photos of students. Use anonymised examples and generic teaching materials.
- Content storage and retention: Uploaded content is stored on Google’s servers. Only upload content you have rights to share; regularly delete old notebooks with student-related content; double-check sharing settings before distributing links.
- Copyright: Ensure all uploaded texts are publicly available, copyright-cleared, or covered by educational fair use provisions in your jurisdiction.
- AI accuracy: The Audio Overview is AI-generated and may occasionally misrepresent nuances in the source text. Always review the podcast before using it in class.

- Learner-created podcasts: Learners upload their own chosen texts and generate their own podcasts to share with the group, practising summarisation and presentation skills.
- Vocabulary flashcards: Use the NotebookLM Chat function to generate flashcard-style vocabulary sets from the source text for spaced repetition practice.
- Cross-text comparison: Upload two texts on the same topic and ask NotebookLM to compare key arguments – then listen to the Audio Overview and discuss differences.
- Home listening: Share the downloaded podcast audio file with learners for independent listening practice at home.
